Growing up as an immigrant, I was fortunate to have teachers, mentors, and counselors in my life who made me feel "seen" and "heard" and helped me navigate the nuances of my complex, contradicting dual cultures. Inspired, it led me to officially train to provide "unconditional regard" (safe spaces) for those in similar situations.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC- NY & WA), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC -CT), and and a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor – Master Level (CASAC – M) with 13 years of experience. I specialize in substance use, anger management, depression, anxiety, and behavior issues.
I have served as a clinician in healthcare for over 20 years as a full-time therapist. I graduated from Tufts University (undergrad) with a major in social psychology and graduated from Columbia University’s School of Social Work with a focus in social problems. My areas of focus are grief, women’s health, and palliative care.
I’m Theo Bizimana, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York. I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya, and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from the University at Buffalo. I bring more than 17 years of experience supporting individuals and communities, including over 11 years of work focused on community trauma in East Africa and 6 years of clinical experience in the United States.
I recall the professor asking the class how social workers are different from lawyers and saying that lawyers deal with black-and-white stuff while social workers deal with grey area stuff. In retrospect, the years of working with the grey area, encompassing complexity of human emotions and vulnerability, degree of truth, uniqueness of each individual and case, ambiguity, dilemmas, nuance, storytelling, and culture has been immensely enlightening.
